Crafting the Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball

For over two centuries, Waterford has marked life’s most meaningful milestones with artistry and craft. On New Year’s Eve, from the world’s biggest celebration in Times Square to homes around the world, our crystal marks the start of a new beginning.

The Times Square Ball itself features thousands of crystal discs that will dazzle the city and capture the anticipation, transforming the countdown into an unforgettable moment of renewal and reflection. As billions of people unite to celebrate the past and welcome the future, Waterford will give this emotion a physical presence, turning light into memory and celebration into something you can hold.

Designing a Symbol of Celebration

Each year, the Times Square Ball takes shape around unifying themes. For the upcoming 2026 New Year’s Eve celebration, the crystal discs will capture the ideas of Infinite Life, Infinite Liberty, and Infinite Happiness. Together, these three guiding ideas speak to the bright possibility of the chapters ahead: a time to embrace living fully, honor freedom, and revel in the joy of what’s to come.

From the first sketches, the design process sought to perfect how crystal can embody these feelings. That intention shaped every detail as the designers considered form and rhythm, as well as the way the patterns could resonate with these emotions. Starting with deep, rhythmic cut patterns that catch and scatter light, each crystal disc joins together for a whole that reflects movement and renewal.

The result offers a shared symbol of possibility for this deeply human ritual. A reminder that the turning of the year is both an ending and a beginning. Waterford honors these fleeting seconds with a brilliance that binds to the celebration and connects us all to the energy of change, from toasting with a flute at home to watching the ball drop in the heart of the city.

Executing the Vision

Turning an idea of this scope into reality requires imagination, precision, patience, and an extraordinary command of material. The journey to tangible form begins with the crystal itself, as the discs were carefully shaped for clarity and strength.

Chosen not only for beauty but for the way it magnifies light, crystal doesn’t simply reflect—it amplifies, allowing each flicker to become luminous and alive.

This is where Waterford’s artistry, engineering, and heritage converge. Every disc must dazzle under the bright lights of Times Square but also fit flawlessly into the Ball’s intricate structure. With thousands of crystals needing to come together as one, the project required meticulous attention to detail.

Each piece was individually cut, polished, and precision-mounted into the steel frame, aligned by hand so that every facet contributes to the Ball’s seamless final look.

Honoring the New Year

As the Ball descends over Times Square, our crystal will define the spectacle while becoming part of the celebration itself.

The same craftsmanship that brings the New Year’s Eve Ball to life also shapes every Waterford flute raised in a toast at midnight, bringing people together through the art of celebration.

From the world’s most-watched countdown to the drinks shared among friends, Waterford is there to magnify light, elevate the moment, and turn fleeting memories into stories worth sharing.

Wherever and however people come together, Waterford ensures that the occasion feels extraordinary.
